The History of South Bank

View of South Bank 1970

Originally South Bank was a meeting place for the Turrbal and Yuggera Aboriginal people. From 1840 to 1893 it was the main focus of European settlement and quickly became the business hub of Brisbane.

Following the great flood of 1893 most businesses moved to the northern bank of the Brisbane river, and South Bank became a port and industrial area with many wharves, markets, dance halls and theatres.

However, following the Second World War, the precinct steadily declined into a virtual ghost town. To revitalize the area a Performing Arts Complex was built in 1977, and eleven years later South Bank became the site for World Expo 88, where 18 million visitors experienced the re-birth of the precinct.

In 1992 overwhelming public opinion saw the site converted into a parkland for the enjoyment of residents and visitors, and subsequent redevelopment of the surrounding areas have strengthened the identity of South Bank into what it is today; a vibrant and evolving experience that hosts 11 million visitors each year.

The apartments were built by the Mirvac Group between 2001 and 2003, and the project was recognised with an award for excellence by the Urban Development Institute of Australia.

The apartments were designed as a mixed use precinct, with public access to the retail sections on the ground level, and high security and privacy for residents on the upper floors, including balustrades, awnings and canopies over the outdoor dining areas.
